Designing a Dorm Room

Campus life: ah, the memories! Mostly what most students remember is a room that they could never quite get clean and a bed that was a cross between a plank on the edges and a futon in the middle. Will you some how miss it, like you would miss the hardships of a protracted forced march; it’s the surviving of it that shapes the pride and fondness of the memories.

Looking at it now, given the importance of sleep, and it is easy to wonder at the resilience of the human body. Students all seemed to do quite well without much sleep, well most of did. In reality of course none did. Many suffered from sleep deprivation and grades must have suffered.

Being able to look forward to your bed is perhaps one of the greatest luxuries you can give to yourself. Most students know when they climbed in that dorm bed it was because their body forced it. Usually had to clear if first of books and study materials; well ok sometimes clear it of games and pizza; well ok most times then.

It’s a natural place to study in a dorm. It’s YOUR space, your private domain. The average dorm room is just 300sqft, that’s about 17 feet on each side. Not much room but enough to make it cozy and not too much that you won’t want to socialize and get out once in a while. Still, while there is room for a desk, etc. it is not ‘natural’ to want to live in a classroom, so most people used to study on their bed.

This is not such a bad idea if you think about it. Advanced technology has given us memory foam, and this changed the game a little. Memory foam mattresses give a consistently supportive base for anyone of any size to sleep on. This is very important because it means that the little rest a student will get (a hectic life) will be a good quality of rest. Sleep is so important to health and well-being; a statistically significant loss memory and focus are both attributable to loss of sleep, and sleep is not just about time, its about how well you sleep in the time spent in bed, so sleep quality is very important to those in study.

Consider the benefits though if we pair that with memory foam pillows, of varying density and sizes, so that a fully supportive position can be found even when not prone. Add to that perhaps an adjustable frame and now you have a bed that can be adjusted to accommodate the aches and pains that sports will bring. Memory foam is also resistant to dust mite infestation, and is allergenic for those that suffer from allergies. With so much invested in this time at college, surely this is the best insurance of it paying off? You don’t need to have a degree in rocket science to know sleep is important and your mattress ought to be supportive to that process.
